A recent survey conducted by
sunglasses for men the American
Optometric Association (AOA) found that overall parents are not too concerned
with the possible damage the sun can do to their children's eye
health.
The survey found that while 66 percent of Americans purchase
sunglasses for their children, more than 25 percent don't check to make sure the
lenses have proper UV protection.
Additionally, less than one

percent) of parents said they make sure their child wears
cheap sunglasses while
outdoors.
Experts say sunglasses are as important of an accessory as a
child's bottle or favorite blanket and that parents shouldn't leave home without
them.
"The lenses of children's eyes are more transparent than those of
adults

shorter wavelength light to reach the retina," said Sarah Hinkley, O.D., the
AOA's UV protection expert. "Because the effects of solar radiation are
cumulative, it's important to develop good protection habits early, such as
purchasing proper sunglasses for young children and teenagers."
Potential
eye damage caused by overexposure to the sun may include cataracts, macular
degeneration and skin cancer around the eyelids.
